Mazda NA MX5 miata - Targa Top

Mazda NA MX5 miata - Targa Top
Targa print and assembly complete.

Over 34 main parts. Printed out of ASA. Dowelled joints. Hot staples. Heatset threads. Slurry glue. Solder flushed joints.

Not a small print or assembly task by any stretch of the imagination and will still require some sanding and finishing, seals, hard mounts and rubber seals and a window.

Many of these projects are simply a cool factor thing to me and I testing the bounds of 3D printed components.

All said and done final top weighs around 7kg.

For those interested this is the “Fez Creations” targa from Cults, however I modified the file to strengthen some area and add in additional mounting points.

One thing I’ve learnt over time is that assembling on the floor far from guarantees a good fitment. So there are some sacrifices to be me made when seeking a glued solution and a fitted solution.

I opted for a stapled assembly on this build, this allows me to mock assembly making adjustments as I went. Rather than assembling on the floor and hoping this would fit afterwards I also decided to build a basic jig to ensure the roof went together and fitted nicely, capturing key reference points on the roof curvature. That extra hour of work has paid off well and aided my assembly process.

I can’t wait to see this thing completed by the owner it’s going to look awesome.
