When you remove the OEM panel air filter and airbox to run a pod filter (or dual pod filters), the factory bumper ducting that used to feed air straight down into the airbox is left with nowhere useful to go.

If you remove the airbox feed ducting completely you rely on cool air making its way in through very convoluted paths around the engine bay.

This elbow redirects the OEM ducting to your new setup, taking the air coming in through the factory bumper duct and redirecting it 90° toward your pod filter location, instead of letting it dead-end into the bumper structure.
